Hermit Crabitat Question?

Hi, i bought two hermit crabs on January 2nd and I bought them the Giant Little Crab Shack bought at Petsmart. It is plastic and wire, mostly plastic, and pretty big. But I was wondering, should I get an aquarium? Or is tthe Giant Little crab Shack okay? Cause I'm on a buget and dont really have money to buy an aquarium, but if i absolutely HAVE to, I will. But if the thing is made specifically for hermit crabs, its alright? Right?Hermit Crabitat Question?

hermit crabs should not be exposed to any metals. This type of tank cannot be safely heated and it will not hold the humidity. If the humidity of the tank drops below 70% the animals will not be able to breath properly.



Get a 10 gallon tank with a glass or plexi glass lid. Because money is an issue get in touch with your local freecycle group. If you can't find a freecycle group put an ad on a local online classified. The tank doesn't have to be water proof. It can be cracked or damaged which you can easily repair with aqurium sealer or even packing tape. Lots of people will give away broken or cracked tanks for free. Used tanks can also go for a steal. I got a 50 gallon at an auction for $10. The 100 gallon that my hermit crabs live in I got for $40 to buy it new would cost $300.

Plexiglass makes a great cheap lids.



the problem with hermit crab specific products is most of it is crap and some will even kill your hermit crab. The big ones to avoid are painted shells, wire cages, and sponges. Painted shells kill, wire cages are dangerous and sponges prevent natural drinking and bathing.

The problem with this kit is that the metal bars will not hold in humidity. Hermits have modified gills, witout enough humidity (70-80%) they cannot breathe properly and will eventually die. This is what most people dont know about hermit crabs. They NEED humidity to breathe. So if you plan on keeping that kit you will need to buy a humidity guage to monitor the humidity, You will have to cover the bar sides with a towl or plastic wrap, which will quickly become a pain in the a$$. I actually had that same kit! then i learned that they needed something better. Just look for a cheaop 10 gallon!

yeah its fine unless they get HUGE... if so i would go with a 10 gallon
You could probably find a free aquarium on craigs list. If not, a new 10 gal is only about 12 bucks at petsmart
