Hey, I read on a review that the "Super Pet Little Crab Shack Hermit Crab Cage" would kill hermit crabs because of the metal. =( Is this true? I was thinking that a pet store would not sell something that would harm anything, but I was just wondering, and why is metal so harmful toward hermit crabs? I am getting one soon and tried calling PetSmart.com and PetCo.com but I couldn't find their numbers =/Can someone please help me on a question about Hermit Crabs?
I would guess it depends on the type of metal that is used...by my hermit crabs have a little cage that is pink plastic but has metal wiring on it (sorta like a gate) so they can climb around it. It's a round cage and they love being able to climb around and to the top and stuff.Can someone please help me on a question about Hermit Crabs?
hermit crabs are sensitive to metal and it should not be used ... there is no metal in their natural environment and all hermit crabs are wild caught ... and your comment that a pet store would not sell something harmful, i almost can not stop laughing and the naivete of that statement ... every heard of pet stores selling betta bowls ??? completely and 100% inhumane but pet stores make lots of money selling them and selling more bettas that end up dying in the stupid things ... go into your local pet store and pick up a container of commercial hermit crab food, 9 times out of 10 that hermit crab food will contain copper sulfate and/or ethoxyquin (banned in other pet food) which are toxic to crabs but yet found in the majority of hermit crab foods ... cuz guess what, when the crabs die from eating that crap, the pet store gets more money when people replace the animals they have killed with "safe" pet store products ... you may be young enough to still believe it is love that makes the world go round, but it is not, it is money ... and you should not get any information on how to raise and/or care for animals from pet store employees ... pet store employees are people who make minimum wage and have no animal knowledge at all other than their own pets ... the fact that you even picked out the super pet little crab shack hermit crab cage tells me you have not done any research on how to keep hermit crabs ... the fact you said you want to buy ONE also says you have done no research ... hermit crabs need to be kept in groups and are considered an exotic pet that requires a specialized environment to live ... do you know what type of substrate to use, do you know what the temperature and humidity of the tank (tank not cage) should be, do you know what they eat, do you know they require two pools of water, do you know how to introduce a hermit crab properly from the store to your crabitat ... i would suggest you google land hermit crab care and read up on hermit crab sites how to care for these animals ... more often than not they are bought as novelty pets, kept in improper environments, kept solitary, and they die within a year ... when if kept properly they will live quite happily in captivity for over 20 years ... so forget about calling petsmart and petco and do the proper research and buy the proper supplies (about 100 dollars if you do everything right) if you want to have hermit crabs ...
